INFLAMMATION – PART 3 – PHASED IN

“RED and YELLOW and PINK and GREEN!
PURPLE and ORANGE and BLUE!
I can sing a rainbow!”

Well should I eat one too?

Of course! Colourful fruits and veggies or as experts call it the rainbow diet –heals, soothes and protects. No, not just because they are colourful but because they contain polyphenols which are anti-inflammatory.

And goodness gracious me, do they work, and how!
So without much ado here is the list in random colourful order:

Berries - Strawberries, Blackberries, Raspberries, Blueberries – Have worked for me in the past beautifully but alas berries are something which people with any allergy issue need to avoid.

Fruits of all types especially: Red Grapes, Cherries, Pears and of course Apples.

Leeks  - very good for nasal, chest, arthritic inflammation.

Broccoli and cabbage - in fact broccoli is one of my saviours, it’s my instant pep me up.

Dark leafy greens - especially Fenugreek (Methi). I can vouch for Fenugreek as it really, really works for me on multiple levels.

Yogurt  - contains probiotics which reduce gut inflammation and is another of my saviours. My suggestion here would be to try a few different brands of Yogurt, as often, it is the type of culture used that works for us. (I can have only 1 brands, the home one is too strong for me, right now).

Peppers and Tomatoes - Bell Peppers, Hot Peppers and Tomatoes – these can work beautifully for some (case in point me) and not work at all for some as they increase inflammation (especially rheumatoid arthritis). In my case peppers work and only cooked tomatoes work. Raw tomatoes hurt. So try them and keep an eye on what works for you.

Beetroot - these really work as well.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil - recently I conducted a personal experiment on myself. Drizzle good quality extra-virgin oil on any cooked food. Do not heat the oil. I repeated it on alternate days for a week and not only did my tummy pain go away but even the slight swelling disappeared.

Ginger, Turmeric, Garlic and Onions – what can I say. These are my superfoods. They work for me for nearly every ailment. Use them liberally in food, cooked and raw as well. If possible source turmeric from a farm as most packed turmeric comes with added food colouring which defeats the purpose.

A few special things I have discovered through my doctors, friends and family over the years have just added some extra zing power to my Phaser/Diet. Giving a special shout out below to my long term and short term food healers.

Pomegranate (Anar) -This is my short term/instant fix. I have a glass of freshly squeezed juice and my pain and swelling reduces within 10-30 minutes. If you don’t mind the seeds you can eat it too. I do this only once or twice a week when I have a problem.
(Note: Drink this within 5 minutes of making since it oxidizes quickly and as I realized once could lead to an allergic reaction)

Fenugreek Seeds (Methi) - Long term fix – I take a handful of seeds (about 10-15) and swallow it with water first thing in the morning for 5 consecutive days. These slowly reduce the inflammation from the gut. I then give it a break and do it again if the inflammation persists.
The normal practice is to soak the seeds in a little water overnight and then drink the same. As this causes fermentation to happen it is best avoided for people with Allergies and Candida.
This is also good for those who suffer from PCOS - like me. In fact as I had to stop my meds for PCOS due to my gut issue, this has helped me manage it quite well.

Apples - long-term and short term - An apple a day, might not keep the doctor away but it really does keep inflammation at bay.
I chomp it, I eat it – peeled and unpeeled and I even juice it (recipe in the next post) Truth be told it had nearly cured me completely till I went off-track and stopped eating it regularly for some crazy other experiment or rebellion phase. Well I’m back on it for the last few months and it is already helping me again.

Note: For those people with citrus allergies who want to eat apples try the red apple variety as they are not sour and might not give you a problem. Also those with very sensitive tummies might find it easier to digest apples in a peeled form.

Inflammation never disappears altogether as any stimuli can cause it in different areas any time but with a healthy diet we can definitely try to reduce it and hopefully prevent chronic diseases.

Signing off on a very, very important note - Every different ailment requires a different diet. Please refer to your doctor / nutritionist before attempting any change in your diet.
Truth be told as much as this sounds like a disclaimer, all food can be good or bad depending on your ailment case in point if you do have a disease that restricts iron in the diet like Gout or Thalassemia it is advised to not eat iron rich foods like green leafy veggies, pomegranate and beets whereas if you have Anemia these same foods would be your power foods. As always, trust your gut instinct.
