POW WOW FOOD – GARLIC THE VAMPIRE SLAYER

Cloaked…bloodsucking creatures… fangs… dripping with blood, lots and lots of it(Yummy), that’s what comes into my head when I think of garlic.

The equation in my head has pretty much always read:

That is, until recently…

I now think of it as a Superfood, as THE number 1 Superfood in fact.

Garlic, belongs to the onion family (Allium) and has been used throughout history for its health and medicinal properties.

Full of minerals it is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant and is also known to be an antidote to some poisons, alcohol and heavy metals.

Myth fact: Historians believe that the reason why garlic kills vampires is because the vampire myth might be based on people with rabies who would run away from garlic because strong smells scared them.

You name any disease and garlic probably cures/relieves it. Just a few of the ways that garlic can heals us is:

          Asthma
          Bronchitis
          Candida
          Cancer protection
          Common Cold and Cough
          Reducing Blood Pressure
          Lowering cholesterol
          Improving circulation
          Stomach Upsets
          Detoxification
          Sinusitis

And it does such a good job as an Immunity booster.

In fact in my case itself, garlic has not just helped me with a single ailment but has healed me on multiple levels - candida, nasal and food allergies (I have been steroid free for my nasal allergies for the past 2 years and have been bringing back new food items in my diet).

In the case of the common cold/flu, its had such a tremendous impact on my immunity/ability to bounce back from it without taking antibiotics that a few of my family and friends have adopted it too.

The biggest impact it had on me however is its ability to detox our body. Thanks to my allergies my LFT tests( Liver Function Test) were coming, how do I say it, wonky. Nothing alarming but it was making me feel tired, fatigued and foggy in the brain. After a month of taking garlic(only thrice a week) not only was I feeling better but my LFT was pretty much in the normal range.

I now take it of and on to boost my immunity and everyday if I feel a cold coming or a seasonal change in the weather.

Note: Please do not take garlic along with any medication as it can cause an interference with it. So if you are taking medication at night and in the morning you can probably take garlic in the afternoon. As always please do check with your doctor.

My remedy:
1     Medium clove of garlic
2     Peel it (please use fresh garlic for this as the unpeeled variety loses much of its healing properties)
3     Chop it finely
4     Swallow with a glass of room temperature water (like a tablet)

Do this only on alternate days in the beginning so as to not overwhelm your body. I would suggest not to have it continuously and to not take it for more than a month at a time.

Note: Do try this with just a very little for the first time as in extreme rare cases garlic can cause an itchy feeling in the throat or an allergic reaction. If this happens do not eat it in the raw form.

If you cant handle the smell of garlic you can also do what a friend of mine does – brush your teeth soon after.

For those who can’t handle eating raw garlic you can also eat it in the form of garlic capsules. These are available across the world through different brands. In India the Himalaya brand offers it too.
I personally prefer the raw garlic option myself.

Also use it in food liberally. I always kind of add more than a recipe asks.
Although it does lose some of its properties it is still helpful.

And before any of you start thinking / come to the conclusion that I don’t like vampires let me set the record straight – I L.O.V.E. them. Books, movies, especially the funky ones like Vampire Academy, I love them all.

After all as the saying goes only a vampire can love you forever
